Newspaper articles about Ronald Reagan tell the story of a man who embodied the American dream. Born the son of a shoe salesman in Tampico, Illinois, Ronald Wilson Reagan ascended to the highest plateaus of power and fame as a movie star, California's governor and leader of the free world as President of the United States.
As President, Ronald Reagan led the United States during its worst economic recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s and implemented economic policies that led to the longest economic expansion in American history. President Reagan was also influential in the collapse of Communism in the Soviet Union. While the revelation of the Iran-Contra affair in the latter years stained Reagan's presidency and led to the indictment of his National Security Advisor John Poindexter, Reagan is remembered for the many progressive actions taken during his administration. An example of this is the appointment of the first female Supreme Court Judge, Sandra Day O'Connor, in 1981.
